Training
The Introductory Course
The Diocesan Fellowship of Healing & Wholeness offers an introductory course for all those who wish to be engaged in this ministry on behalf of their church.
The course can be run in a number of formats, most usually over a weekend or for 6 weekly sessions of 2 hours length, but it can be adapted to the needs of an individual parish or deanery.
The following range of topics are covered:
- Healing and the Bible
- What is Christian healing?
- Models of Christian healing
- The importance of wholeness
- The qualities and skills needed for this ministry
- Practical listening skills and prayer ministry
- Planning a healing service
- Hard questions

All of these topics are necessary for those who wish to be involved in this ministry on behalf of their church. To participate in the course students need the approval of their incumbent and PCC and they will also, eventually, need to have an enhanced CRB check for working with vulnerable adults. Once the course has been completed there is a probationary period of approximately one year during which participants are encouraged to gain as much experience as possible. At the end of that time it will be ascertained with both incumbent and participant that they still feel called to this ministry and they will then be approved until the next Diocesan review. Every three years all approved lay ministers will have a review with their incumbents in order for re-approval to take place. The next round of re-approval will be in 2010 and every three years thereafter.
All lay people who lay on hands in public worship or offer prayer ministry on behalf of their church are expected to undertake training.
For those who wish to develop their interest in this course further it is also possible to undertake an Authorised Lay Minister’s course specialising in Wholeness and Healing. The training is for one academic year and incorporates one core module in Ministry Development and two elective modules. The areas of specialist study include:
- Theory and practice of prayer ministry
- Listening to God, oneself and others
- Theology of Healing and Wholeness
- Working with individuals with specific needs
- Practical aspects of the healing ministry
If you are considering the possibility of an ALM course in wholeness and healing it is necessary to have undertaken an Introductory Course first.
